Mojácar

Mojácar celebrates the 94th Birthday of its most Senior Resident

No vigente.

Edna was born in the spring of 1925 in the north of England, in Washington, near Newcastle and has lived in Mojácar since 2004 with her daughter, Jill Bennett and her son in law Patrick.

As well as joining the popular keep fit class, she also took advantage of the other free Spanish and Salsa dancing classes on offer as soon as she arrived and Edna, always with a smile on her face, reminds us, "you are never too old to learn, keep active and have fun."

After the class, Edna’s friends presented her with a magnificent bouquet of flowers, followed by cakes and drinks for everyone in the Centre bar for thirty-five companions, including her tutor for the past 12 years, David Parra.

This, however, was only the beginning of the fun which continued for three days, with a party with friends the following day at the home she shares with Jill and Patrick.

The next day, Sunday, brought the weekend to a close with a double celebration, as it was the day of the actual birthday as well as British Mothers’ Day. Edna was congratulated by her friends of all nationalities at the hotel El Puntazo where Mojácar’s "Macenas" 3rd Age Club held their Spring Lunch and Dance attended by the Ana García, Councillor for the 3rd Age.

Edna Thirlaway is a very much loved resident of Mojácar. She has led a full life including having to leave home when she was 18 years of age to work at military air bases in the Second World War.

After her marriage to her beloved husband Bill in 1950, followed by the birth of her son David, she became a housewife but she took a very active role in society in the town of Seaham where she then lived, joining various social and Church groups as well as being a hospital volunteer.  She took on many leading roles in the local Amateur Dramatics and continued her studies by taking evening classes in literature, history and geology.

Mojácar was top choice for Edna and Bill after many holidays searching with Jill and Patrick along the Spanish coast. Sadly, her husband Bill died in October 2003, the same month that they had organised their final move to "this place of paradise that had everything we were all looking for."

So, soon after, at the age of 79, with her daughter and son-in-law, their plan went ahead to settle in Mojácar where Edna quickly made many friends of all nationalities. She is especially grateful, however, to the Mojaqueros who have welcomed her with open arms in her adopted town where she "loves her people and their culture."

Happy Birthday Edna!
