Mojácar’s Tourism Councillor, Emmanuel Agüero Leclerc, recently attended the 2019 Velofollies International Cycling Fair, held from January 18th to 20th in the Belgian town of Kortrijk.

Velofollies is the most important cycling fair in Europe, covering the largest and most varied selection of cycling products and offers on the market. At the show there’s always the chance to view and test mountain, urban, racing and electric bikes, complemented by a whole range of accessories and clothing. Visitors have the opportunity to receive advice from the professionals on hand, as well as find out about excursions, trips and sporting events for amateurs as well as professionals.

Emmanuel met with a number of different tour operators specializing in sports travel at the Fair who are interested in Mojácar as a destination and, took advantage of his stay to promote the ‘Gran Fondo Costa de Almería’ event,  for which the town has become a reference point in the cycling world.

For the 2019 race, which is the second year for this international gathering, Mojácar Council will again collaborate with the Servigroup Hotel Marina Playa, Kortweg Cycling Travel, Almería Provincial Council and the Velofutur logistics company.  It will take place on May 4th, with cyclists coming from all over Europe, mainly from Belgium, Holland and the U.K. as well as numerous Spanish racers, who will face the long and medium distance of 185 km and 125 km respectively.

Consolidating and increasing this type of sports tourism and off season activities, by bringing a greater influx of visitors to the area to break seasonality, has been the key objective that Emmanuel carried through to this prestigious Fair.

In recent years, the presence of cyclists on Mojácar’s roads during the winter months has become a daily sight. This is seen as very important to a wide range of possibilities that are increasingly taking shape, thanks according to the Tourism Councillor, the joint work of his Council and all those involved in the local tourism sector.
