MOJÁCAR RECYCLES 112 TONS OF GLASS OVER THE SUMMER AND RECEIVES THE “IGLÚ VERDE” AWARD
Over the summer, Eco Vidrio, the non-profit organization managing the recycling of glass packaging waste in Spain, have managed to collect 112 tons of glass with the co-operation of Almanzora-Levante-Vélez Consortium and Mojácar Council, an increase of 56% over the same period last year.
Mojácar has received the 'Iglo Verde' award for having surpassed last year’s glass recycling figures and, also in recognition of the commitment to this form of sustainability shown by those in the hospitality trade as well as townspeople. Eco Vidrio increased the range and size of their comprehensive glass recycling plan over the busy summer, an initiative that aimed to raise awareness and the number of participants within the hospitality trade. In this period, 80 establishments in Mojácar collaborated, which is highly important, given that they generate 50% of the disposable glass waste. In addition, the summer season is extremely vital to the plan, as 30% of the year’s recycled glass is collected then.
This local success is down to the participation of catering professionals and Mojácar Council, backed up Eco Vidrio’s publicity campaign by. To encourage people to take part, the organisation has installed extra containers as well as decorating many with awareness raising summer motifs. Also, the professional establishments have been provided with 71 specially adapted collection holders, as well as increasing the frequency of their glass pickups. The plan has seen 80 coastal municipalities and 6,300 hotel establishments decide to participate, thus managing to recycle a total of over 27,900 tons of glass containers, avoiding CO2 emissions equivalent to taking 4,500 cars out of circulation.
According to the figures for 2016, the people of Mojácar recycled a total of 106,144 kilograms of glass in their 52 collection ‘igloos’ (averaging 1 per 125 inhabitants), which means that each person recycled on average 16.3 kg.
