First ordinary plenary session since the state of alarm

Mojácar Council recently held its first ordinary plenary session since the state of alarm was decreed, with all Councillors maintaining mandatory social distancing and wearing masks in the meeting room.

It was a meeting covering mainly economic issues and, the financial plan for 2020-2021 was approved as the first point of the day.

Included on the agenda was the revocation of the previously agreed budget surplus, due to the change in circumstances surrounding the health emergency.

In the plenary session held on February 26th, the Council approved an application to utilize the budget surplus for debt redemption. However, given the urgent need to act with the Covid-19 outbreak, authorized measures were taken on March 17th to allow apply a part of the surplus to be spent on social policies and assistance, along with financial aid to those in need. This Royal Decree authorized 20% of the balance, which placed 25,672 Euros at their disposal to finance related matters.

A grant of 10,000 Euros was also approved for Mojácar’s Red Cross, whose team have been carrying out excellent work throughout the current crisis, to add to all that they have done in previous years. For this, the Council regards this humanitarian organization as the most proactive and suitable to administer any necessary aid to the town’s residents.

Another point on the agenda, which was approved, was the Council's final step towards a low-carbon economy as part of the FEDER Programme which will provide the entire town with low consumption lighting. The Finance Councillor, Francisco García Cerdá, presented details of this second phase utilizing FEDER assistance, although it will in fact be the third phase as there was a previous one co-financed with the Almería Provincial Council.

This is the second time that the European Union has co-financed the project, with an investment of 1,066,000 Euros, to match a municipal contribution of 113,000 Euros. This will finance work on 915 changes to lighting, fixtures as well as related items. With the completion of this phase, all public lighting will be replaced, which will reap financial benefits, energy efficiency, as well as road safety.
