At the last ordinary session of the Municipal Plenary, Mojácar Council took a crucial step in the updating and adaptation of the General Urban Development Plan (PGOU), in compliance with Law 7/2021, on urgent measures in matters of urban planning and regional ordinance, approved in December 2021.
Mojácar's PGOU, definitively approved on the 19th of May 2023 and published in the Junta de Andalucía’s Official Gazette (BOJA) on the 27th of July of the same year, had not been adapted to the new determinations of the law to date. With the entry into force of Law 7/2021, the identification of urban land was carried out, as established by the regulations, incorporating land that is urbanistically transformed, occupied by buildings, or that makes up part of the urban network consisting of roads, facilities, plots or settlements.
The Mayor of Mojácar, Francisco García Cerdá, wanted to clarify that this identification of urban land does not imply that such land is ready for building or modification, but rather that it is an instrumental procedure that aims to provide legal certainty to owners and ensure the correct application of the law.
“It is important to stress that this adaptation does not mean any risk or modify the status of the land as plots, nor establish an immediate availability for detailed planning. It is simply a recognition of urban land that will serve to apply the corresponding regime to this land from the entry into force of Law 7/2021,” explained the Mayor.
García Cerdá also highlighted that the instruction focuses on the land in front of the coast, from what is known as the Congo to Río Abajo, on the Paseo del Mediterráneo. “This is only the first step. We will continue working to identify other urban areas that are not currently considered as urban land in the PGOU and which, according to the new law, meet the criteria to be classified as such,” he affirmed.
Another of the measures unanimously approved was the naming of a public square in honour of Antonio Bonet Correa, a renowned Spanish art historian and academic, in recognition of his significant contribution to the cultural life of the municipality.
Mayor Francisco García Cerdá underlined the importance of this tribute, noting that
“Antonio Bonet Correa was a fundamental pillar in the promotion and dissemination of art in Mojácar. His dedication and commitment left an indelible mark on our municipality.”
As well as the tribute to Bonet Correa, the Municipal Plenary addressed and approved several key initiatives for the development of Mojácar:
- Local Plan for sports facilities and equipment: unanimously approved, this plan reinforces the municipality's sports infrastructure, promoting physical activity and the well-being of citizens.
- Innovation of the PGOU in the area surrounding the Hotel Moresco: also approved, this measure updates urban planning in a strategic area, promoting ordered and sustainable development.
- Modification of the Levante Almeriense Firefighting and Rescue Consortium statutes: the modification of article 26.2 of the statutes was approved with seven votes in favour and two abstentions, adapting the operational framework of the consortium to current needs.
- Request for collaboration to the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge: the need for an urgent restoration plan for the coastline, affected by recent storms which have seriously eroded the municipality’s beaches, was raised. Mojácar, which has 19,000 regulated accommodation places as well as numerous second homes, considers the protection of its beaches as a priority to maintain its tourist appeal and preserve its main natural and economic resource.
Mojácar Council reaffirms its commitment to the balanced development of the municipality, integrating cultural promotion, the improvement of infrastructure and the protection of the natural environment into its political agenda.
