Mojácar was the setting this weekend of the I Andalucian Base Handball Cup, which brought together more than 2,000 people in the municipality who could see the best teams from the eight Andalucian provinces.

The competition, organised by the Andalucian Federation, involved 850 players from Cuevas de Almanzora, Vera, Mojácar, Garrucha, Huércal-Overa and Los Gallardos municipalities.

The six teams that lifted the acclaimed Andalucian Cup trophy were:

  • In the male “alevin (novice) category, CD Europa was proclaimed champion. And in the female category, the youngsters from Fundación Unicaja Málaga Costa “A” achieved victory.

  • In the male “infantíl” (youth) category, Cajamar Urci Almería “A” took the cup in the final. And in the female team, Puertosol gained victory.

  • Finally, in male “cadets” (juniors), Zenagro BM Roquetas became tournament champion. And in the female category, BM Maravillas Benalmádena celebrated its victory in the final.

The Mojácar sports centre hosted three finals, male and female juniors and female novice; and the presentation of prizes to the top four qualifiers in the three categories of novice, youth, and juniors, male and female.

The winning teams advanced to the semi-finals on Saturday, competing for the places through to the finals on Sunday in Vera and Mojácar, the latter municipality being where the Mojácar Mayor, Francisco García, the deputy for European Initiatives and Entrepreneurship, Esther Mercedes Álvarez, the head of the Andalucian Handball Federation, Sebastián Fernández Molina, and representatives of the neighbouring towns taking part in the cup, presented the prizes.

In addition, the champions of each category have obtained a place for the new Super Cup, which will be held in the 2024-2025 pre-season and which will pit the champions of the Andalucian Cup against their counterparts from the Andalucian Championship (CADEBA).

The competition was a success that consolidated the I Copa de Andalucía Base as a prominent event in the Andalucian sports calendar and fulfilling one of its objectives for the Mojácar municipality, the breaking of the seasonal nature of tourism.
