Francisco García, Mayor of Mojácar, has sent a direct letter to the Minister Sara Aagesen Muñoz requesting immediate action to save the coastline and protect the municipality's tourist season.
Mojácar Council has taken a proactive step in response to the serious deterioration of its coastline following the storms suffered this winter. The Mayor, Francisco García, has sent an urgent letter to the Minister for Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen Muñoz, demanding immediate and coordinated action to restore the municipality's beaches, which are essential for tourism, employment and the image of the destination for the coming tourist season.
“Our priority is guaranteeing the safety and quality of the destination we offer. We cannot talk about tourism if we do not take care of the essential: our beaches. That is why we have asked the Spanish Government for urgent and coordinated action to regenerate our coastline following the damage suffered due to the storms”, stated Francisco García.
Mojácar's beaches have suffered unprecedented damage: loss of sand, emergence of rocks, destroyed structures and stretches completely unusable by the public. Areas such as Marina de la Torre, La Rumina, El Palmeral and El Cantal look very deteriorated just a few months before the start of summer.
The Local Council has initiated contacts with the Provincial Coastal Service, environmental technicians and specialised companies to coordinate a coastline regeneration plan. At the same time, seasonal service contracts have been processed with the necessary foresight, in accordance with the law.
“We know that our beaches are the heart of Mojácar. We are going to recover them, with or without the help of the PSOE, but it would be desirable that we are all rowing in the same direction,’ declared the Mojácar Mayor.
The local authority issued a reminder that Mojácar is one of Andalucía’s main tourist destinations, with more than 800,000 overnight stays annually and a development model linked to coastal sustainability.
Mojácar Council reiterates its commitment to quick and effective action for the recovery of the coastline, but stresses the need for the Coastal Service, under the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, to step forward and take responsibility for the restoration of the municipality's beaches, which are essential for tourism and the local economy.
In addition, and in parallel to the formal request for urgent action sent by the Mojácar Mayor, Francisco García, to the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, the Local Council has activated the necessary procedures to guarantee the seasonal services on the municipality's beaches.
The Local Council has published the announcement for the call for tenders for the authorisation to occupy the maritime-terrestrial public domain for the operation of seasonal services. This request for tenders is carried out once the Territorial Delegation of the Regional Ministry for Sustainability, Environment and Blue Economy grants the required authorisation
“Despite the fact that our beaches are not in the best condition due to the effects of the latest storm, the Local Council continues working to ensure that Mojácar can offer its tourist services next season. That is why we have urgently conveyed to the central government the need to act as quickly as possible to regenerate our beaches. We know what tourism means to our municipality, not only economically, but for the families who depend on it. Hence we have launched the request for tenders for the authorisation of seasonal services, ensuring that, despite the adversities, the quality of services on our beaches is guaranteed. We are committed to the future of Mojácar and to the vitality of our tourism sector”, stressed Francisco García, Mayor of Mojácar.
